Swing Or A Garland Poem by Rini Shibu

Swing Or A Garland

Rating: 5.0

Some friends are seasonal
bring forth colorful flowers
Bloom day and night
Which last for a short period
And wither away from your life
But sow seeds in your heart
And memories last for life time
Some friendships grow like a tree
Deep rooted with strong branches
They hold you at times of trouble
And care for you under their shade
Some are like creepers
Which spread on you and ruin your life
But it's your choice
Whether to tie a swing on a tree
Or pluck the flowers to make a garland

You carried the extended metaphor in its various representations fluidly and comfortably. I particularly enjoyed, however, the sudden shift at the end when the somewhat fatalistic, passivity of the reflection turns on itself and you skillfully extend the metaphor in a completely different direction—that we have an active role to play in 'pruning' our relationships. (creepers, hehe)
