Terrified By Reality Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

Terrified By Reality

I remember when I decided,
The time had come...
Trying to fit in with everyone.
So...
I volunteered I would lose my mind.
And donate it to what was then,
Considered to be 'normal'.
Like others appeared to be.
Conforming to an approved and accepted,
Way of life.
Performing tasks in noticeable routines.
Doing what was both socially and politically correct.

Today?
After adapting to all necessary changes made.
I have discovered,
Losing my mind I did not do at all.
But what I have found to observe,
Are more living their lives...
Doing their best to pretend,
Living socially and politically correct.
Has left them needing to be medicated.
That aids and assist a portrayal of normalcy.
And doing this without being detected,
By those they had declared mavericks.
Misfits too unfit to be competent at anything.
Especially...
Unable to have the mental capacity,
To realize who amongst them...
Had been the ones certified clinically crazed.
Affording to pay the price it takes,
To hide and disguise...
Their minds to have long from them gone.
Lost to delusion.
Terrified by reality.
And denying the existence,
Of its corrupted destruction!
