The Best That You Can Be Poem by Bryan Norton

The Best That You Can Be

Rating: 5.0

The past reveals who I am
But not what others see
I paid for every promise made
The consequence came free

I walk the same familiar streets
The pattern of my days
So many roads are beckoning
So many different ways

Salvation offers peace of mind
And shared identity
But what if I'm the only one
Who looks and thinks like me?

Do I belong to someone else?
Can human souls be sold?
Does practicing my self control
Mean doing what I'm told?

Sometimes we make hard choices
That shape our destiny
But you succeed when you become
The best that you can be.

You succeed when you become The one you choose to be. It's true. You can decide who you want to be and work toward that goal.

A beautiful motivational piece of poetry written with clarity of thought and mind. A poignant work of art. Thanks for sharing, Bryan.

bryan, recommended by laurie van der hart, i've been checking out out your poems and just read this one. of those i've read, this, to me, has the best flow. i like the questions (better to ask than be didactic, no?) . i especially like the line I paid for every promise made The consequence came free - so true and well put. i'm intrigued by the last three stanzas. as an anabaptist christian, i'm wondering if i'm correctly relating them to my own experience. at the risk of being wrong, some thoughts: you are indeed the only one like you. and, in truth, if we're self-aware and honest, everyone of us has somewhat idiosyncratic convictions. at the heart and supreme in biblical faith is love- love of God (one might say love of love- for God is love) and love of others. and the essence of faith is trust in this God for our security, our lives. faith is not is not mental assent to doctrines. if you're familiar with the sermon on the mount, see if you can find where jesus says we're blessed when we have the perfect doctrine (as if any one of us has it?) . if you start from genesis, see if you find any directions on how we're supposed to read this book we call the bible. because certain things are held by a majority doesn't make them true. thanks for your poem, and thanks for the opportunity to once again think on important things. love guide you. glen kappy
