The Break Of Dawn Poem by Rajendran Muthiah

The Break Of Dawn

Could I forget
your raining of kisses
on my sister’s kid
glancing at me
before giving each one?

Our torrid love-affair
was to caper on
in bits of paper
and in the sleepless corridors
of our chest and head.

Your perky smiles
were the philtre,
I drank with my eyes
struck with awe and wonder.

Our teeny hearts never felt
the whirlwind of castes
or the strong undercurrents
of the religious virus.

We cared more for
the snooping snipers.
Yet the rain of arrows
of rumours inflicting sorrows
made your parents rage.

The days of vacation
with your glowing smiles
were all the Valentine Days for us.
But once you left the village
I found your smiling face
in the flowers and rills around.

Till you came back on holidays,
I bore your face in my heart
and my eyes would look at the stars
till they closed for a brief spell.
