The Celtic Tiger - Poem by Karen Solie

That's what they called the great financial boom that hit the place
After Ireland joined the European Union's race
To be the economic marvel of the world, a spin
That soon saw Euros by the tens of billions pouring in.

But earner/dependent ratios are what marks a country's wealth,
And once the Catholic church no longer ruled, the birth rate fell;
So perhaps it's not the Euro that's made Ireland seem so regal,
But the laws of 1985, when they made Condoms legal.
