The Pelican Poem by Eugene Levich

The Pelican

Rating: 5.0

Oh, how wonderful it must be
To wing like that Pelican o’er the sea!
What shall we name it, I ask my wife.
“Ulysses” she says, “or Penelope.”

Above our lagoon it glides away,
Then back again; it spies its prey.
It dives to the water with a mighty splash
And gets its dinner— with no outlaid cash.

Above our lagoon it glides away
On some unknowable odyssey.
Speak! Oh Speak! Oh Wonderful Bird!
Tell us where you shall reside.

Oh, how wonderful it must be
To wing like that Pelican o’er the sea!
What shall we name it, I ask my wife.
“Ulysses” she says, “or Penelope.”

Gino, must be a brown pelican. i think Penelope Pelican sounds nice! i like the poem, and it's not JUST because i like/love birds. nice rhyming. thanks for sharing. bri :) i hope the repetition of stanzas is not due to your american senility! i like the repetition. did your wife insist that she be mentioned again? ? here is my thankyou for allowing me to enjoy your poem. Guy In The Chair I spy an old guy in a big lounging chair. I see him as, o'er him, I glide on the air. I know he wishes to know....where i reside, and from him that information I'll not now hide. I live on a nearby island, Ithaca by name, and Ulysses dallies in Troy, but him I don't blame. But while Ulysses dallies in war I dally in love, with mortals from Earth and gods from above. And my name is Penelope, as near-guessed your wife. I'll fly home with my fish now. You both have a good life. :)

It is wonderful to be fascinated by the wondrous life created around us that we so hurriedly aim to destroy. Bringing awareness towards the beauty and amazement of some creatures is by far a blessed endeavor. This poem does just that. Thank you, so sweet and lovely to read.
