One may be striving all along,
O Kunti's son,
A man of discretion,
Still, the senses turbulent, strong,
And working from behind,
They would abduct by force his mind.|| 2.60 ||
Here is the transliteration with the meanings of Sanskrit words:
yatatah hi api kaunteya puruśhasya vipashchitah |
indriyāņi pramāthīni1 haranti prasabham manah ||
yatatah: one who strives, endeavouring
hi: indeed, certainly, for
api: also, even, in spite of
kaunteya: O Son of Kunti, Arjun
puruśhasya: of a man
vipashchitah: of wisdom, of good discernment
indriyāņi: senses
pramāthīni1: turbulent, agitating
haranti: (they)carry away, defeat, abduct
prasabham: by force, violently
manah: the mind
1. Why are senses so turbulent? Our body is made of the following five fundamental elements related to the five senses of knowledge:
Elements / Sense Object /Sense Organ
(tattva)/ (viśhayā) / (indriyāņi)
_____________ _______________________
Space (ether)/sound /hearingears
Air/ touch / skin
Fire/Lightform /vision / eyes
Water /taste /tongue
Earth / smell/ nose
______________________________________________________
The supreme element (param tattva)first created space. From the space was then created air; from air, fire; from fire, water; and from water, earth. Earth helped create plants and greenery (auśhadhi)from which was created food, and from food, the body. Thus the roots of our existence are deep and involve the five elements (panch mahābhūta)linked with the five senses of knowledge (jňāna-indriya) .
Topic: mind, senses
How the senses abduct the mind of a person has been so nicely portrayed here through a translation of Sanskrit Shloka 2/60 from Bhagbad Geeta. It is very nice that you have juxtaposed the poet's not. Thank you dear sir for sharing this poem.
