This Hair Shirt Doesn'T Fit - Poem by Esra Sloblock

I've been on the wagon
I did it for a bet
Ale by the flagon
Foregone without regret

A month of abstinence
Was indeed a revelation
Personal countenance
Avoided organ devastation

The summer months were heavy
Potation has been manic
The lack of decent bevvy
Caused little or no panic

In honesty 'twas easy
Although intensely boring
I remained bright and breezy
With moderated snoring

Slumber hard to come by
For a week or more
For more weeks not a barfly
I rarely darkened the door

Just once a week did I attend
And imbibed orange squash
The disbelief from many a friend
I did soundly kibosh

I came out on the other side
Victorious in my quest
'No more of this, ' did I decide
'I'll have a pint of best'

Yes, I saw the benefit
Of self enforced sobriety
I'll not become a derelict
In booze culture society

Dylan Thomas never wrote
A sober poem ever
So I await my next drunk quote
Because it's big and clever!
