Thunder Hole

The Thunder Hole area in Acadia National Park,
located on Mount Desert Island in Maine,
is a natural wonder often compared to the Halona Blow Hole
on the island of Oahu.

While it doesn't operate on a set schedule like, say,
Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park,
it still provides a spectacular spectacle
when everything comes together in the right way.

Thunder Hole is located along Ocean Drive
and is characterized by a grand staircase
and the often parked tour buses or trolleys.

On rare occasions, when the ocean rises at half-tide
and the wind blows from the right direction,
the waves are pushed into a long crevice in the granite bedrock, compressed against the back wall
and then explode high into the air.

At the same time, the incoming waves roll large rounded boulders across the bottom of the channel,
causing the thunderous sound that gives the Thunder Hole its name.
Methinks, it's worldly famous
