To A Selfless Hero! Poem by Khairul Ahsan

To A Selfless Hero!

Rating: 5.0

You were not called for your service,
As you were already retired
From Thai Navy;
But your conscience,
Your love for children and humanity
Sent you to Tham Luang Nang Non Cave,
At the base of a mountain locally called
‘The Sleeping Princess'.

You made sure that the soccer boys and their coach
Had enough oxygen to come back;
You placed oxygen tanks along the route of their return,
But alas! Your own tank got depleted while on duty.
You being unaware, unconcerned about yourself,
Quietly "ran out of air"!

All of them returned home safe, but you.
You set an example of supreme sacrifice
For the love of humanity,
In the service of mankind.

My salute to you, Petty Officer Saman Kunam!
May you rest in peace in heaven!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This is former Petty Officer First Class, Saman Kunam,38 years old, former diver with the Thai Navy who died on 06 July 2018, returning from the Tham Luang Nang Non cave where the "Wild Boar" youth soccer team and its 25-year-old coach were trapped. When he heard about the incident, he immediately answered to his call of conscience, reported to the Thai Navy Seal and offered his services for the rescue operations as a volunteer.

He died while trying to supply oxygen tanks to the 13 people trapped two miles deep in a cavern. Saman was diving in the caverns, placing oxygen tanks along the route out and he simply "ran out of air".

While the world is fraught with the dangers and concerns of destruction of humankind by the evil schemes of the war mongers around the globe, the angels of peace spread their wings and silently flew to the caverns of Tham Luang Nang Non to save thirteen precious human lives, of whom the world was unaware until they were trapped. Souls like Saman Kunam are an embodiment of love and peace for humanity. They do not die, they 'fade away', leaving behind a glory that mankind can be proud of!

My salute to you, Petty Officer Saman Kunam! May you rest in peace in heaven! As a mark of respect, I shall keep your picture as my own profile picture on Facebook for the next three days!

Today, almost the whole day, I thought of the supreme sacrifice this man has made to save those twelve soccer loving (and playing) children and their young coach. His sacrifice has brought tears of joy to their family members and the peace loving people of the world, while perhaps, tears of sorrow are still rolling down the cheeks of his own family members. He deserves a national, or perhaps an international award for peace! My thoughts and solemn prayers for his bereaved family!

@Edward Kofi Louis, Yes, it's love for humanity from a very loving, tender heart that lay hidden under a military uniform. Thanks for your comment.

'While allowing others to breathe, he himself ran out of breath! So among war mongers and wicked schemers, there are angel like men! Let the world fall prostrate before heroes like Saman Kunam! ' - No tribute can be better than this soulful tribute to a fallen hero, who gave away his own life to save many others. Appreciate your heart touching comment, @Valsa George.
