Visiting Ma's Grave: Poem by Christina Simmons

Visiting Ma's Grave:

Took the never ending walk leading to mum's grave
That I knew I'd intuitively find cause mother wanted me too
Patiently and silently she was beckoning me to come

With no one else around had a cry for mum you see
Sang a song the words seeming to be coming from ma's mouth
Reassuring she's still here just sound asleep
That's my mum you see

Sang a lullaby for her ears only could hear; please to
descry my song; smiling down at me wishing me well
Saying farewell - come again don't be stranger: said a little prayer
Just for my mum you see; the very strong witty and wise woman before me
Married dad because she loved him - her one and only chap

Always had a smile for her man; was mother blessed for having had him?
The man she referred too proudly as 'my husband! ' Even though he was a scoundrel
Adoring pickaninies, broods....brats that's what we were but none-the-less
Mother accepted us cause she gave birth by fathers' seed: wed him for better, poorer, richer or worst
'Why moan desire to break free! 'Dear mother died uttering those words

Always standing up, defending her man and by his side for evermore
When love comes knocking at your door welcome it with open arms
Remaining none the wiser; who am I to say otherwise? Nudge, nudge wink, wink.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Wrote this after I visited my mum's grave on Saturday 16th July 2016.
Last time I was there was at her funeral back in 2004. It was a journey I couldn't make on my own until now. Peace.
