What Happens In The Dark Poem by Glen Kappy

What Happens In The Dark

Rating: 5.0

At 3 AM I lay awake
and wondered what I'd find
when I went into the kitchen
and flicked the light switch on.

We've had these big reddish ants
come around and under
the shut wooden window
right above the sink.

Just seeing them is disconcerting
even if they haven't bothered with our food—
no, they've been coming in at night
then crawling out again at dawn.

Yesterday I stuffed foam rope
in the window's gaps
then pressure-sprayed with water
the wall outside from ground to sill.

So at 3 AM I lay awake and wondered
if my measures were successful
and fretted at my shrinking options
if the measures failed.

Seeing them is disconcerting as I said.
I have no idea what they're up to in the dark
but they're harmless far as I'm aware
unless one counts the trouble to my sleep.

Did you ever see the movie " Them" decades ago? It was about giant ants, bigger than people. That's the kind to worry about!
