Would-Be Grandfather Poem by Unnikrishnan Sivasankara Menon

Would-Be Grandfather

Rating: 5.0

Convalescing after a surgery
I was forbidden by the surgeon
from lifting weight, walking long,
driving, even travelling by car.

Restless and breathless as I am,
it was hard for me to obey
the one-hundred-and-forty-four
declared on me by the surgeon.

When my frequent breach
of the surgeon's strict diktats
reached my son-in-law, he had
no choice, but to speak to me:

'If you do not regain your health,
uncle, how will you be able to take
care of your grandchild? ' was his way
of announcing the happy news!

These words, needless to say,
had the required effect on me,
bound me to the post, despite
all the discomforts bothering me.

Poet's Note: '144' refers to Section 144 of Indian Criminal Procedures Code (CrPC) which empowers an Executive Magistrate to issue Prohitory Orders on movement of people.

Thank You, Bharati. As I have answered poet Mahtab Bangalee, none of us would have had the time to spend with our own children. But, when we are grandparents, we have more time. That makes us happier. Maybe, our children too feel that way: leaving their children safe with us!
