Ode To My Beloved Dog

Black like the night.
Gray as an old man's beard.
On wobbly legs you walk.
Shaky, creaky, unsure limbs,
that once ran and leaped,
now carry you unsteadily forward.
Still confident and proud.
You no longer hear me
when I call,
and still you come.
Cloudy, baleful eyes,
gaze loving and trusting
out on the world.
Though what you see
be now cloudy and hazy.
Distorted by the slime
that enshrouds one eye.
I nudge your sleeping form
and pray that you will move.
Anxious and afraid
I hold my breath until you do.
