The two elements - traffic and a child - made me immediately fearful for the child's safety. But upon thinking over the poem I conclude it's not about danger. This is how I interpreted it. A driver comes to a red light and can't keep hurrying. But the sight of a smiling child catches her eye. The smile is so big it's as if the child is waving hello. It makes the driver appreciate this moment in life which makes LIFE itself more meaningful. Is that the gist? I ask because the poem is very compressed. There's a lot of energy in that compression.
