My lovely wife gave me a Father's Day card this morning
Because she knows our daughter will probably forget Dad
....unless she needs some money for gas
The card was hand made with a picture on the front
Of my wife and me sharing a huge hug at my office desk
She was sitting on my lap with her arms around my neck
Her luscious lips puckered to deliver a package of Love
A Kodak moment to be sure...but only one of many more....
When I opened the card there before my tired eyes
Was a picture of my beautiful daughter at the tender age of ten
(seems like only yesterday she was twenty)
And me sitting cross legged on the floor next to my precious
We were both loading up our tackle boxes
Mr. Wiffle fishing lures spread out all over the place
Her little laugh I can still recall.....
Laughing and so happy to be going fishing were we
Picking out the various colors of lures we would need
To catch that moment in time....only to be released all too soon
To suit any Dad who loves their child the way that I love mine
The hand written note inside the card
Told me of my wife's endless love for me
And what a great father and a wonderful husband I have been
All these many years....
Because when you've been married as long as we have
There are no grounds for divorce......only Homicide
I could really sense the frustration in your heart Ted. Don't let your daughter age you before your time. She loves you for more than what's in your wallet. She's just afraid that if she shows it, you'll have power over her. Give her ten years. You'll see. Anyway, tender thoughts and clever twist at the end. But then, what would a Ted Sheridan poem be without that twist? Happy Father's Day. ~ Sara
My sentiments exactly, I have never considered divorce, but murder, frequently. It relieves the feelings ever so much more! Great poem, nice humourous touch at the end - and based on reality! Kind regards, Margaret.
Okay, you had me going with nostalgia, right up until the Homicide. I thought the 'noose' was going to be the memories of your little daughter and the tackle box, restricting breathing until a tiny tear...but, NO! Well, if it's any consolation...50% of all marriages end in divorce...but they don't say anything about the ones that end in knife or gun play. Love this surprising poem! What a spontaneous father you must be! xxElysabeth
Ted...I loved this one. It was filled with beautiful sentiment right up to the end! ! LOL...I really think my favorite part is the ending though...it brings reality to Hallmark! ! : -) It's going in my favorites...maybe every 5 years or so, I'll read it over...just to do a reality check...: -) Hugs, dee
You know, i've often wondered what the difference was between a necktie and a noose. Just what did Ted Wiiliams know? The joys and frustrations of fatherhood are nicely juxtaposed here. And a nice 'thank you' to the wife for making it all possible, keeping it all in perspective, and that trademark TS humor at the end. Happy Dad's day to you. It is the number one holiday for collect calls, you know...
Like the poem the ending’s what makes it real lots won’t see this enjoyed
