A Poor Introduction To Life Poem by Susan Williams

A Poor Introduction To Life

Rating: 5.0

It seems tragic
doesn't it
to hear a slap
and hear the newborn baby cry
or even howl with red-faced rage
at the sudden assault
after months in the warmth and comfort
of the mother's loving womb...
it seems a poor introduction
doesn't it
that the baby's first experience with life
is an unpleasant one to him or her
but oh how we mothers want to hear that cry
and how frightening it is when we don't
and doctors and nurses suddenly leave the mother
and rush over to the baby and huddle around it
and things are whispered and things are done
that cannot be seen from the delivery table and
time freezes with fear and then terror grows
and the mother pleads to their backs-
what is wrong?what is wrong?
and no one answers
and no one turns
and the mother tells herself not to bother them
they are busy and cannot answer her and-
dear God, what is happening that no one can turn
and tell her not to worry, that all is well
and those dreaded words would not be said-
and then
oh! ! !
the baby cries and cries
and waves her little red arms and legs around
and cries and cries and cries
and the mother is filled with absolute joy

Fantastic poem in response to a wonderful poem. I pick these lines: dear God, what is happening that no one can turn and tell her not to worry, that all is well and those dreaded words would not be said- and then oh! ! ! the baby cries and cries

Kevin, You have quite a good sense of humor. Hahaahahahahahahaha! Loved how you put that! ! ! ! And yes, you men miss an awesome tie not bearing a child but somebody has to stay fit and keep the wolves away!

Geeta! ! You know what? Men don't know what they're missing... I know that sounds like the beginning of a joke or a man-slam but Mothers are tied to that child they bore for 8 months and than bear after a horrendous battle and then wait for that indignant cry and pray for it. We get bound forever with our children. I am glad you enjoyed this peek into my life and understood what it means

Suddenly, Susan has become an expert neonatologist. Or is it that the know-all mother in her has woken up suddenly? Pity us, the poor ignorant fathers. Very beautiful picturesque poem. Enjoyed reading. The paradox of the crying baby and happy mother, although of common knowledge and experience, makes it wonderful.
