Don't know why
but looking at the lawn beneath the apple tree
from my seat beneath the arbor in our backyard—
the mixture of longish grasses and clover
in greens lighter and darker and spots of dazzling white—
I'm thinking I've never seen anything richer or more lovely
in all the places I've been in more than 72 years.
Maybe it's in part because of my age.
Maybe it's in part because I feel I've earned the right to relax.
And yes, if you're wondering, it's mainly just the lawn
my attention veering upward now and then
to the hummingbird couple visiting the feeder
or to the left where the rosemary sways with the slight breeze
as bees come and check out its flowers.
—And now a lone robin is pecking at the grass
while keeping, it seems, a wary eye on me.
And maybe it's in part because all those painters
who came here and started a movement got it right—
there's something special about our New Mexico light.
Wow! In one delightful poem, you've managed 3 tributes: 1) retirement 2) Mother Nature 3) the painters movement. That's a huge accomplishment! And very successful
Hey, Richard! I've been away from PH for a number of reasons, but seeing your name and comment makes me smile, makes me glad to be back. Thank you! -Glen
May I believe that " there's something special about our New Mexico light."… lovely poem. Enjoyed reading
Thank you for your comment. There is indeed something about the light here. We're high desert with dry air which, I guess, has a lot to do with it. -Glen
Lovely poem on nature and its beautiful environment, dear Glen......10
Thanks! More and more nature comforts and reminds me of God—so good against all the bad news that can warp our perspectives. Thank you, Geeta. -Glen

I would like to translate this poem
Your words are as beautiful, and true, as Georgia O'Keeffe's brilliant paintings. The land of enchantment shines! Wish I was there right now...
Smoky, can we ever say enough about all that the creation means to us, of Whom it reminds us? -Glen
