Are We Civilized Anymore? Poem by Mamta Agarwal

Are We Civilized Anymore?

Rating: 5.0

Last refuge of man,
Home is no longer sacrosanct.
Today children feel unsafe
From those who vouch to protect.

Family and filial bonds,
On the verge of death.
The sense of belonging and bonhomie
Has been replaced by anomie.

Self above everything else,
Even family can be exterminated
For personal goals and success.
So what if it’s an inhuman act.

My heart bleeds,
As with shock and tears I read,
That it's possible a father
Killed his own daughter.

media brings to light the trends in society,
but doesn't it have a social responsibility?
they should exercise restraint and not air
such crimes all through the day.

because of this children of the nation
are traumatised and shaken,
and ask with a plea
father can it happen to me?

the voice of concience
that watches over how we behave,
and makes us feel guilt and shame
is not heeded for selfish gains.

The case will be laid to rest
Due to lack of evidence
How to arrest this social degeneration
For instant gratification?

Can there be a bigger tragedy
Than this in our civilized history?

Questions that come to my mind on reading the news of a NOIDA girl allegedly killed by her own father

ANOMIE
Sociologists say anomie is a condition typified by absence of values in an individual

may be true...it shouldn't have happened. but it is just an aberration... could be one in so many millions. and so it is certainly not a 'trend'. well, mamta, your are putting an alert on human mind...a poem addressing human behaviour

a social issue brought forward in words of concern... truly need is to realize humanity rather then make it big on tv just as a news...

No bigger tragedy than this can happen Mam' the basic fundamental unit itself having abberations and forming cracks and upon whom to place hope and build our society? Sad, it is on the rise slowly like a serpent rising its head getting ready poised to attack, unless we act swiftly and justly, what punishment willbefit them - I can not think? It is happening every where but percentage of reporting is supressed. A social evil sleeping in the coner within our homes, you have identified and thrown a light. Terror within the walls of ones own home, you have raised the question well, Are we civilised Anymore? Thought provoking and disturbing poem too. Angel

the voice of concience that watches over how we behave and makes us feel guilt and shame is not heeded for selfish gains True...though sad being aware to reality. Home is no longer a safer ground to stay coz sometimes crimes are made in our own home such homicide, incest, rape, child abuse and many others...Great write! An eye opener...
