Autism Poem by Dave Alan Walker

Autism

Rating: 5.0

I'm crying I'm trying but the crowds
and the rooms have no faces
just voices and the noises

Jumbled up words
when the teacher is talking
it looks like I'm not listening
but I hear every sound

From a cough to a sneeze
from a scratch to a bang
overload of the brain

My hands and my fingers
will move on their own
I don't even realise
until I get shouted down

I wasn't fidgeting Miss
I think it helps my despair

I'm breaking I'm shaking
I need not be frightened
in a place that should be understanding

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
My daughter has autism, trying to get the school to understand her needs is proving to be like trying to climb a mountain.

Aw maybe she should be in special needs schools as here where we live they give special care and attention to autistic kids. This poem is great and expresses the situation awesomely. Kudos! !

My Grandson is autistic and non verbal. He's nearly 13 years old now. It's a frustrating world for them to accept. Thank you for sharing x

Thanks for the reply, the main stream schools need to be more understanding.
