Epidemic Poem by LeeAnn Azzopardi

Epidemic

Rating: 5.0

I don't want you to die
Not like this
Not slowly and painful
You never smoked
Or ate fatty foods
Exercise until you were too tired
To listen to my poems
But you had to get infected
With that virus
A stupid mistake
Of not wearing a condom
And not filling that prescription
When we both lived through
The epidemic of the 80's and 90's
When it was really dangerous
Now, I have to watch my best friend,
A man I hope to make love one day- die
But I will take care of you
Even through the tears

There is raw emotion in this poem, from the opening lines, pain seeps through your words their power is truly felt. I was not around long enough in the 80s and a child of the 90s, so AIDS epidemic, is a memory, but it still resonates today. I cannot begin to describe the sadness I feel when reading this. Thank you for sharing it, I am glad to read this, more people should.

The harsh truth has spoken. I remember those scary days in '80's and '90's. I was in in Ne York when the movie star died of AIDS. I think it was 1984. Dear poet, I am legally blind but recent mode of recitations help me to listen and feel feelings of regarded poet like you. You penned well. _____++++++10 for you.

A great verse on profound, platonic love. Terrific verse, LeeAnn.
