The first inkling
That something was wrong
Starting school, at age six
Entering first grade
The teacher gave us pencils
To learn our letters and math.
But,
What was that on the end?
An ERASER!
What's that?
Teacher explained,
"That's for mistakes",
"We all do that"
At that moment, I became afraid
Mother had not told me about that
I dedicate this poem to my school teacher sister, Cindy. Today is her birthday! ! !
i got a fine, big, but brief, laugh from the last line, my favorite line here. :)))) gee, in New York State St. Patrick's Day was a legal holiday: no school. a joke. ;) i was going to say also.......it was a legal holiday during NYC's mayor John Lindsay's term in office in '60's and 70's, thinking he was Irish. i now see he was a WASP, but i don't know if he was Irish. besides, he 'ruled' (not really) NYCity, not NYS or the US. (cont.)
A picture of me in 1st or 2nd grade, Osakis Public School, Osakis, Minnesota. I was the oldest of 7 children. I have lived with this eraser my whole life.
A perfect picture for this poem, Hank! It looks as if you really are afraid!
(cont.) i wonder if you've read this recent one from 'bri'. (i'll check) [no, you have not commented anyway]: My Missing Sock! …[ Old Age; Disability; Serious (Mostly) : Military Veterans; Quite Long ] bri :)
(cont.) ...I love the poem, and thanks also for the Poet's Notes! to MyPoemList. i do not recall being fearful of starting my school years, NOR of ending them when i quit Cornell in the fall of my senior year and 'became' a Conscientious Objector............about the time you went off into the Service (to your country?) . (cont.)
(cont.) about his time in office i found online: It was Lindsay's misfortune to serve as mayor of America's biggest city at the height of the urban crisis brought on by the coincidence of racial conflict, labour unrest, rashly generous liberal reforms, fiscal improvidence and political confusion. Great poem, Hank! Who knew that we all make mistakes? I hope Cindy had a happy birthday.
