Five Poems For Rose Marie Juan-austin
1
Rose-breasted Grosbeaks
Today I Saw Grosbeaks, at least one female & one male.
You can distinguish sex from coloration. You will not fail.
I saw them from my window. The 'Feeder' they did not touch.
They ate parts of nearby plants. I enjoyed my view very much.

Rose Marie
I believe Rose Marie is Asian born.
She's a fine poet who doesn't 'blow her horn' **.
I count her as a friend.
To me, comments she does send.
If she left this site I might be forlorn ***!
**
blow one's horn
'Blow one's own horn' is an informal idiom that means to brag about oneself or one's achievements, especially in a way that shows pride or too much pride
***
forlorn
pitifully sad and abandoned or lonely.

In Vain
Just when my luck was 'lookin' up' **
unknown to me, one stole my begging-cup!
Another night of hunger is now my fate;
no day-old bread and apple will grace my plate.
An unemployed cripple is what most 'see'.
Ulcerous sores cover my neck and my right knee.
Tonight, Sleep won't come easily in my box in an alley.
Too soon my mouth will feel and taste like Death Valley.
I might as well just get squashed by a subway train.
No, my luck's looking down again. My life's been in vain.

'lookin'/looking up'

Asheville North Carolina 2024
[ After Hurricane Helene's Flood Waters ]
Hurricane Helen's Flood Waters struck disaster this week.
The future for some affected must look pretty bleak.
Rubble and trouble lie all about.
To God and Government I think many shout.
[ Of Federal Aid, President Joe Biden does speak. ]
[ Bri's Note: My wife and I live downriver from Asheville,
about 25 miles away. We live HIGH above flood areas, BUT
the small nearby town (10 miles from us) , Marshall NC, got
clobbered [ hit HARD ] by river water that rose 27 feet above
normal, causing misery and mayhem for residents, businesses,
and other facilities (in M's low-lying areas) .: (
Lucky for 'us' in 'the hills' we could soon drive to the surrounding
elevated areas such as a large grocery store, bank, and gas station
which were spared by the flood. We 'lost electric power' twice,
but not for as long as many in Western NC experienced, and we
have generators and a 40ish man living with us to help out. ]

Filipina Wives
Each of my two best male friends had a Filipina wife.
Bill married Eliza after his first wife lost her life.
Now Bill, aged seventy-six, and 'Liza' have two little kids.
I hope the second marriage 'stays off the skids' **
My first 3 of 4 wives caused lots of strife! ***
**
'off the skids'...slang
the opposite of 'on the skids', which means:
(of a person or their career) in a bad state; failing.
***
strife
angry or bitter disagreement over fundamental issues; conflict.
[[ I, Bri, OF COURSE, never cause 'strife'! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ]]
:)))))
(October 2024)
Bri Edwards, my nom de plume ***, BUT Brian Edward Whitaker in 'the Real World'?
***
nom de plume
an assumed name used by a writer instead of their real name; a pen name.
Poet's Notes on above poem(s) :
I 'love' birds, especially 'wild' ones, and chickens and turkeys etc. for eating; I once was served pheasant at a meal. I have a 'Note' after one of the five poems in which I relate a bit about my wife's and my experience in Western North Carolina US of A when the recent Hurricane Helene passed uncomfortably close to our home, And once, though not hungry or poor, I noticed an unopened pack of candy canes (Christmas candy) sticking out of a trash/garbage dumpster behind a store near home (YEARS ago, many) . I took it home and used the plastic-enclosed candy to decorate a Christmas tree; OK, I guess I ate one or two 'canes' also. :) Thanks for visiting me, Bri. ;)))
Ok, OK! ! I'm sure I submitted this collection of short poems to PH (PoemHunter.com)
once several days ago, BUT it is NOT showing up on my PH list of poems! ! ! Did it ever? ? ?
So today I typed it again (from paper) and submitted it, only to have PH send this terse note to me:
The [possibly-lying] note to me after I hit 'Submit' today:
'The poem you're trying to submit is already on the poem list.'
What the......f++k! ?
Could bri/Brian have made an error? ? ? I don't think so.
: (
I shall look at my list of submitted poems once again and search once again 'by date submitted' for the five poems for Rose Marie.
OK, The poem(s) are ready now, but now I have to, once again, add ' #hashtags' aka topics covered, at least a little bit, in the five 'shorties'. Well this PC 'work' helps keep me out of
trouble and out of the way (from my Dear Wife) here at home....at least! !
I've been retired (from USPS) for nearly 20 years, and....I deserve this time on computer! !
5th Poem..... Glad to know you have two friends whose wives are Filipinas. A lot of Filipinas are married to US service men specially when the US military and naval bases are still operational in the Philippines. A well rhymed poem, Bri.
Your poem no.4 about Asheville, North Carolina is a well crafted and informative with great rhyme.
Great to know that you were spared from the wrath of Hurricane Helen, Bri. It was indeed, pretty scary! You are very lucky you live in the hills. Right now, Philippines, the northern part is hammered with four successive super typhoons (Signal no.4)
In vain poem is so deeply poignant and touching. I hope and pray nobody could experience this lowly life. Third World has a lot of them. A well expressed poem. I could feel the miserable life of the pauper.
As regards poem no.1, I haven't encountered a grosbeak. I hope someday I can see one specially the rose breastfed grosbeak. I just googled and I saw some pictures of this kind of bird. They are lovely!
Typographical error.....should be rose breasted grosbeak

Truly great to see poems dedicated to the brilliant poetess Rose Marie Juan Austin. She is wonderful Poetess and a human being as well. Kudos! Top score
Geeta, I thought to myself [[ as no one else would listen to me ]] 'Bri, why is Geeta bothering to mention that Rose Marie is ALSO a 'human'? (cont.)
I totally agree and so are you, the same. Always and honor to be your friend and read about your fame!
