Forbidding Winter Night Poem by Glen Kappy

Forbidding Winter Night

Rating: 5.0

from 'While Passing Through'/Winter

A cold wind
rattles the poplar

the full moon
in its branches

like a silver coin
in the hand of Judas.

and thank you, anil, for taking the time to read and respond. the silver coin image is one of those that seemingly came out of nowhere. it was startling to me but felt right. -glen

Hi Glen. Funny, I was just looking at the icy trees, trying to recognise them by their shapes. This poem creates such a clear image and feeling. And then - clang - that name Judas! How clever. The picture of Judas at the full moon of the passover and the moon being the silver coin of betrayal. You see spiritual connections everywhere!

hey, laurie! i wondered if you'd see this one. glad you did, and thank you for your comments. yes, i do see spiritual connections everywhere. it comes in large part, i think, from being steeped in scripture. i can't explain it, but the image of the silver coin in judas' hand just came to me out of the blue- which is how most or all of the favorite things i've written have come. -glen
