How Many? Poem by Shaun Cronick

How Many?

Rating: 5.0

How many ships must sail to war?
How many glorious dead unaccounted for?
How many war widows must pitifully weep?
How many orphaned children deprived of sleep?
How many war-mongers fuelled by hate?
How many religious peoples to decimate?
How many villages still left to gas?
How many people to kill en masse?
How many citizens to cajole and hoodwink?
How many corpses left to rot and stink?
How many bombs still to be dropped?
How many bullets that can't be stopped?
How many mines await innocent feet?
How many limbs wrapped up in a sheet?
How many war criminals escape the hangman?
How many minorities to bully and harangue?
How many booby-traps coldly await their lure?
How many years of violence can people endure?
How many politicians must cheat and lie?
How many lives evil dictators deny?
How many white flags drenched in bloodshed?
How many peace treaties to arrogantly shred?
How many coffin makers run out of wood?
How many villagers shot where they stood?
How many smart bombs that go astray?
How many children die today?
How many tanks crush what's in their way?
How many children die today?
How many last breaths left to take?
How many families to annihilate?
How many high tech missiles miss their mark?
How many shell-shocked troops must disembark?
How many booby-traps await to be sprung?
How many war dead are so young?
How many priests to give last rites?
How many bully boys war excites?
How many endless wrongs need righting?
How many hearts weren't set on fighting?
How many men left to go over the top?
How many wishes for all wars to stop?
How many enemies now make amends?
How many enemies we now embrace as friends?

Ask yourselves, please,

How many?

The first casualty of war is innocence

very high level of human morality can be found in the form of poetic questions, each reader facing the reality to answer them honestly, may it change some, we hope, excellent Shaun as usual 10++
