I Can't Be Dead? Poem by Annette Aitken

I Can't Be Dead?

Rating: 4.9

I Can't Be Dead?

I float above those strangers there
armed with pick and shovel
sweat beads running down their face
leaving track marks stains on their skin.
There's no remorse or sense of guilt
viciously they snubbed me out.
Lay me down beneath the ground
dumped damp earth across my face.

Why am I in this place?

Tragically they took from me
the life that lay in front of me
all alone and in the dark
screaming for my mum and dad
where are you? now.
I need you badly

Why have you both forsaken me?

My mouth is dry,
will never drink.
My hands are cold,
will never heat.
My body wet,
will never dry.
Is this how it feels?
When you die.?

All at once I saw a light
it quenched my thirst
it held me tight
it made me warm
it dried my body
it built a comfort up inside
it came to take away my pain
take me to a better place.

I float above those strangers there armed with pick and shovel sweat beads running down their face' goes beautifully with the title 'I Can't Be Dead' and the things we shall never again do, stirs me on to live a little :) enjoyed :)

Your descriptive powers at your best. It created a very real picture of a near death experience. Luckily I've never had one but I can imagine many will identify with this poem. You are consistently good and I always look forward to reading your work.

Excellent poem, some of us have made the journey only to be sent back to our lives.
