Jayadeva's Geeta Govinda - A Love Song 24 Poem by Geeta Radhakrishna Menon

Jayadeva's Geeta Govinda - A Love Song 24

Rating: 5.0

Radha is a Svadhinapatika Nayika here. One who is in full control of her lover. Brimming with passionate feelings for her beloved Krishna, she boldly asks Krishna, to be ornamented and decked by him, with flowers, scents and jewellery.

O Yadunandana, apply sandalwood balm on my breasts,
With your hands, which are cooler than the balm itself.
Draw a design with deer musk on this elegant vessel of love.
So said Radha, to her darling of the Yadava clan,
A profusion of joy lighting-up the playful heart!

Dear love, brighten my eyes with black kohl,
My eyes! that are darker than the black bees.
Do kiss away the dark patches on the eyelids
Caused by the fiery attack of Kamadeva.
So said Radha, to her darling of the Yadava clan,
A profusion of joy lighting -up the playful heart!

O! Doe-eyed Krishna, your piercing glances are so attractive.
Look at my ears and pierce them with earrings rounded in shape
That can lure and encircle us in a web of love.
So said Radha, to her darling of the Yadava clan,
A profusion of joy lighting-up the playful heart!

My dark hair, like a beehive,
Lie smothered around my lotus -like delicate face.
Remove and smoothen this hair away,
You can, then, look at me without any distractions.
So said Radha, to her darling of the Yadava clan,
A profusion of joy lighting-up the playful heart!

With sweet scented musk deer paste
Apply a ‘tilak' on my forehead,
The sweat drops on my brows have dried up,
Straighten my brows with your deft fingers,
O Kamalanana, my lotus-faced Krishna!
So said Radha, to her darling of the Yadava clan,
A profusion of joy lighting-up the playful heart!

O Krishna, you protect the chastity of womanhood,
By making a fan out of peacock plumes,
More beautiful than the Cupids tempting feathers.
Decorate my dishevelled hair with flowers
Which lie scattered due to the intensity of love play.
So said Radha, to her darling of the Yadava clan,
A profusion of joy lighting-up the playful heart!

O my wonderful lover!
Chain my hips with diamond studded girdles,
Rearrange and cover my body with beautiful clothes and jewellery.
So said Radha, to her darling of the Yadava clan,
A profusion of joy lighting -up the playful heart!

With a heart full of love and empathy,
Listen to Jayadeva's exquisite poems.
Remembering Hari's feet with reverence,
In this Age of Kaliyuga,
Is a shelter against the ravages of Time!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
To me singing Ashtapadis is an experience which I am not able to describe. Each time, I sing them, as a prayer, it gives me great amount of joy. The most amazing thing about these Ashtapadis is that though the lyrics give an earthly flavour, yet, when it is sung, it becomes so religious and divine. The quality of the music generates Bhakti or devotion rather than any other gross feeling. The Ashtapadis are so sweet, smooth flowing, and beautifully moulding into an exquisite Raga. Jayadeva's Sanskrit verses can be sung with ease and can easily adapt themselves to a rhythmic pattern. Such is not the case with any other Sanskrit composition. And singing them in slow tempo, in Sopanam style, is an experience par excellence not just with the singers who sing them, but also to those who listen to it. Ashtapadis are sung with such devotion that the passionate, erotic love transcends itself to a level of spiritual love.

This famed song of Geeta Govinda has been translated by me from Sanskrit to English.
I published this work in the form of a book in 2002. The second Edition was published in 2006 and later, the third edition came out in 2010.
I am now happy to publish it in Poem Hunter for the poetry lovers.
