Jayadeva's Geeta Govinda - A Love Song 9
Radha's Sakhi addressing Krishna says:
'Oh Kesava! By deserting Radha you have caused immense grief,
The house she dwells in appears like a forest.
Her own friends seem to imprison her,
And her heart burns like a forest fire.
She is now like a frightened dove,
Even Cupid seems to be very cruel,
Like a leopard leaping towards its prey!
Radha feels like running away but her friends surround
her and prevent her from leaving the place.'
The pearl necklace that hangs around Radha's breast
Has become a burden for her!
O Kesava! Separated from you, Radhika is most unhappy.
The cool sandalwood paste applied on her body,
Instead of being a soothing balm,
Seems like poisonous venom.
O Kesava! Separated from you, Radhika is most unhappy.
Radha breathes hot air, sighs heavily,
And burns with the fire of passion!
O Kesava! Separated from you, Radhika is most unhappy.
Like a lotus without its stem, Radha's eyes are tired
Shedding numerous drops of tears!
She looks hither and thither, hoping to get a glimpse of you.
O Kesava! Separated from you, Radhika is most unhappy.
Her eyes like tender shoots,
Turn into red flames of doubts,
Wondering about your whereabouts!
O Kesava! Separated from you, Radhika is most unhappy.
Radha cups her cheeks with both her hands,
So she remains for long like a beautiful crescent moon.
O Kesava! Separated from you, Radhika is most unhappy.
Radha repeatedly chants 'Hari, Hari! '
As if she is dying,
Feverishly praying that Krishna would remain her lover
For many more future births too.
O Kesava! Separated from you, Radhika is most unhappy.
May Jayadeva's passionate love song,
Placed at Krishna's sacred feet
Give solace to all Krishna Bhaktas.
My mother was very fond of music. Any kind of music brought a glow on her face and a twinkle in her eyes. However, she was particularly fond of South Indian music. The last one year of her life, she kept listening to Jayadeva's Ashtapadis. That's one reason that motivated me to translate this beautiful love song into English.
Geeta Govinda is a lyrical poem of Jayadeva, in simple, yet beautiful Sanskrit language.
This famed song of Geeta Govinda has been translated by me from Sanskrit to English.
I published this work in the form of a book in 2002. The second Edition was published in 2006 and later, the third edition came out in 2010.
I am now happy to publish it in Poem Hunter for the poetry lovers.
