Joe (No Ordinary Joe) - Poem by Pete Hollingsworth

He'd seen her playfulness and easy grace
And marked her gentleness and growth apace
And how her smile would linger on her face
Mary's love he sought to know, Mary's love he sought to know

She loved to see the wood beneath his hand
Take shape and form as at his wise command
And his well chosen words her feelings fanned
He was no ordinary Joe, he was no ordinary Joe

So each unto the other did declare
Steadfast Joseph and maid Mary fair
To love and cherish and in all things share
Unto the church they soon should go, unto the church they soon should go

We make our plans and lay our little schemes
And fret and toil to realise our dreams
A brooding spirit on our enterprises leans:
Mary with child! Joe last to know! Mary with child! Joe last to know!

Betrayed! Betrayed! She must be weak and base
Yet Joe, you seek to shield her from disgrace
And though perplexity has marked your face
Your love is greater than your woe! Your love is greater than your woe!

An angel in your dreams your fears relieve:
'Honour Mary, Joe; marry and believe
By brooding Spirit is the child conceived
In Mary's womb, Immanuel grows! ' In Mary's womb, Immanuel grows! '

Thus is fulfilled what was of old foretold
Man's awful enmity with God resolved
The case against us through Jesus is dissolved
Mercy and grace unto us flows, mercy and grace unto us flows

Mercy and grace
Mercy and grace
Mercy and grace unto us flows
