(The Story behind the Legend is that between 1940 & 1945 three million WW2 personnel sailed through perilous waters to Durban, South Africa, en route to Burma & Mediterranean battlefields. With morale at low ebbs, they were greeted by Perla Siedle Gibson, international concert soprano, singing a welcome to the crowded decks gliding by. She never missed a convoy, not even the one that sailed the day she learned her eldest son had been killed while serving with the black watch in Italy) .
One palm open towards the heavens
The other enfolds a megaphone
Dear Perla do you know you were honored
Yes, the Queen of England left her throne
She travelled to this very place
To unveil your monument
To reveal your face
The soldiers still remember you
A plaque was placed by the Royal Navy too
I met one of them by the way
That's why I am standing here today
I imagine you singing now without a care
With all the other angels way up there
It is beyond my contemplation to emagine such courage, such tenacity and such strength that this woman had. 'Music nourishes the soul' and I'll bet the soldiers were more determined to fight so that such women could continue the song of life in a better world. thanks a million for sharing this.
This is such a brilliant story, such a brave lady, singing beyond her pains so that others may find some relief Amazing Love duncan X
Tia, having been one of the 'sailors' that witnessed her welcome into the port of Durban, I am so very pleased to read your wonderful tribute to a very special lady. Well written.10/10 Ian
