Lonely At Christmas Poem by Paula Glynn

Wandering down the empty highstreet
Christmas Eve desolate and lonely
Only the cold wind against his back
The freezing cold snow bitter and cruel
After losing his full-time job at the shop
After losing his father's financial support
His father aggressive and controlling.

Meek and mild mother not much better
Always giving in to his deceiving father
Always hiding the cuts and bruises
No loving family greeting him this Christmas
No one sheltering him from the white snow storm
Money impossible to obtain
Money impossible to earn,

No one willing to take a chance
And employ him without an address
For school was hard but he graduated
Not enough for his violent father
Now lost in his young and tainted life
Lonely as he watches happy families
Happy couples sitting by the fire in the warm,

Their house windows sheltering
Them from the cold and bitter snow storm
As they sit together and watch Christmas television
As they share Christmas food and cheer happily together
Yet he is out in the cruel cold
With no one to love or share affection
But when rescued never alone again:

Walking into a Crisis charity accommodation
Learning to rediscover his motivation
Going to College to gain future qualifications
Getting another part-time job at a shop
Knowing Crisis make it better
In the cold and snowing weather
Memories from the future not disappointing,

Of a now grown man that did succeed
After learning to trust himself and believe
Now a father himself he does work
And he raises his achieving son well
His son never going through hell
And every Christmas they sit together
And watch daytime Christmas television,

As they share delicious Christmas food
And cheer happily together over Christmas crackers
Knowing poverty is a situation they refuse
Helping others learn to fend for themselves
Learn to obtain a certain degree of wealth
And live their precious lives every Christmas
Celebrating the season of cheer and new beginnings.
