A smile doesn't mean you're happy
Some people smile on cue
At parties and reunions,
When a camera is in view.
Some folks are smiling through their pain
They think they must be brave
And it's for times when they're alone,
Their teardrops they do save.
Some wear their smile like a disguise,
Intended to distract.
The cheerful mask that they display
Is really just an act.
But the cruelest smile of all
Is from one who betrays you
The 'friend' who stabs you in the back,
The pretender that you thought you knew.

Well, Louis, we would hope so. But some deceivers can be quite charming and convincing- - Just look at all the famous serial killers! This is where a good heavy dose of discernment and perception will prove handy! : -)
Thank you so much, Bernard, for your positive support of my work. You are valued on this site!

It is not easy to smile through pain and unhappiness. The smile can be 'like a disguise'. It is also good to accept a smile at face value-genuine.
I agree, Michael, that when we see someone smile, at the very least, we hope that it is genuine! Thanks for commenting!
