Not The Best Of Nights Poem by Loke Kok yee

Not The Best Of Nights

Rating: 5.0

‘twas hot and humid with a threatening sky
But the rain just would not fall
Not even a night breeze to bring some relief
While life slackened to a crawl
The moon peeking through when afforded a break
Seemingly looking appalled
All below sweltered in oppressive darkness
Not the best of nights at all

An owl hooted loud that he did not agree
A mouse secured in his claws
Bats ravenously fed, shrouded by the dark
The night for them was a ball
For hunters at that time an unending feast
For others; woe to befall
The sultry night worsen by unmoving air
Not the best of nights at all

A nightjar unrevealed drifted between trees
Only disclosed by his calls
Then loud piercing screams reverberated far
Cats mating caught in a brawl
Broke the night's deadness but only for awhile
The rest were fear struck in awe
The wind held its breath and only stillness reigned
Not the best of nights at all

A captivating poem. I enjoy the night and usually stay up until at least 5 A.M. but when the night is hot, humid and still, it is not the best of nights. :)

Most of the summer nights at Karachi are like this, loke kok yee has a nice observation and ability to convert his observations in a wonderful poem.

Nice poem and at least now you can figure out the night, not the best. (or among the worst) . but you have a poetic tone

On a sultry night, when sleep eludes most of us, we hear all ominous and frightening sounds ! Such nights can never be comforting.....! A beautiful poem that brings to fore your ability for close observation! A sure 10

What awesome talent resides in your pen! ! ! Your words weave magic and all of a sudden your readers are there beside you in that night, that hot humid night, restless, feeling the threatening sounds in the dark beyond us...of mice captured by owl's claws... of darting bats and the sudden scream of mating cats if that was what those screams in the night really were... Your poem makes me breathless! ! ! 10 +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
