One Evening. Poem by Michael Walker

One Evening.

Rating: 5.0

I turned on the radio
but I did not like the songs.
I tried the whole dial,
AM, FM, no talkback thanks.
Using the remote and feeling remote
I pressed all the television channels.
Cooking? Can anyone make this exciting?
Estate agents were showing off overpriced homes,
while on three proselytizing channels
preachers were trying to convert viewers
but I was not converted to anything.

At night it began to rain heavily
on the iron tiled roof, the best sound easily.
I was converted.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This is how I have spent most evenings lately. Sitting in silence, thinking about my past. I think that the NZ television channels are predictable, repetitive, and shallow. Pay- TV
-like Sky-could be different and better.

Michael, very nice, nothing like the sound of falling rain on a dark night.

More or less we all share similar experience. Our news channels abound in things which do not concern a common man who is worried about his job, financial problems slapped by Covid 19 induced lock-down, rising unemployment, rising prices of essential goods etc. Cassettes, CDs have become obsolete. But yes, you can rely on YouTube for almost every thing- your kind of music, old movies, news, entertainment, vicarious site-seeing etc.

from the radio, through TV channels, to rain on the roof, this is a glorious poem my mother used to hope or pray it would rain at night, so guests would be blessed with the sound and peace, of rain on the roof, a beautiful sound to easily sleep sound and well with

We alk go through this emotion at one point if time. We try to seek solace in the gadgets but nothing caught our fancy. I can relate to this poem. 🙂
