Our Mouse Poem by Jette Blackstone

Our Mouse

Rating: 5.0

We cared for a tiny mouse,
but still he died.
It was running from a crow,
silly rodent
that thinks he can escape giant wings and claws.

He only had one red eye left, the other being pecked.
Despite the darkness, the mouse kept running—
youthful folly
predation in a carpet of the greenest grass.

I am a mouse, and
I think you are that lovely green carpet
and I am a single blade—and your blades grow
all around me, making me seem bigger
and what adds up for me is the fact
that I am not alone, even when running away.

I think you can be found
most simply by the traces of your colors, my love.
Your yellow green eyes, black hair, white teeth
bathed in olive green against my yellow-white;
lying in this space always makes me feel safe.

The gentle mouse we rescued rests within his shoebox
a soft green pillowcase for a blanket.
Your arms wrapped around mine
bring stillness, our spaces suture together
until the scars are no longer visible.

I relate much, Jette, to your observing something then seeing yourself or something else in it; so many of my poems are like this. Suture together is a great phrase(!) -Glen

I would have never thought that the image of a mouse could make such an extraordinary poem! But, I have read some of your poems, and... I am left speechless. Your creative talent shines in all its splendour!

How you have linked the mouse image with a love relationship! When strong arms wrap around, even a tiny mouse assumes bigger dimensions! Jette, I totally agree with what Susan has commented! Your style is unique and unfathomably profound!

Your nursing vocabulary brings a whole new level and depth to these lines. Absolutely top-notch writing, my friend. 10+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Thanks so much for reading Susan. I love reading your commentary that bubbles with both intelligence and wit! I'm not a physician or nurse, but I play one on PH! LOL....
