Saint Michael's Mount Poem by Sylvia Frances Chan

Saint Michael's Mount

Saint Michael's Mount

Saint Michael's Mount
red and green
are my favourite colours

In the sun
they appear brighter

but my paintings are impressionistic

blurred contours
and if you look at the painting from a distance,
it becomes visible what it includes

I paint impressionistic,
not an easy style artistic

now i write poems about what i paint,
often poems oft take up my precious time

last holidays I was on an island on the beach of Normandy,

you can easily reach it from the other side
the other side then you are in England

The island of Mont Saint Michel is the name
it has a lot of fame,
Mont Saint Michel is still on the Normandy beach at Avranches,

on reaching the coast of England,
I start to ask
did I really cross over to England?

for me
high in dry
tax free
Mont Saint Michel
yes, for me

I asked someone walking there,
how is its name?
Mount Saint Michael,

was I really there
or had I just dreamed?

This castle monastery has an impressionistic look,
this coast of England often suffers from fog.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The Complete Note:
Mont Saint-Michel is a small, rocky tidal island in Normandy, France located in a large bay at the mouth of the Couesnon.

The granite massif of Mont Saint-Michel is crowned with a medieval abbey.
On the spire of the abbey church, a statue of St. Michael has stood since 1898, rising one hundred and seventy meters above the bay.

The island is located about 1 kilometer off the coast at the town of Avranches in Normandy.

It is originally a tidal island: it was accessible by land at low tide, but at high tide it was surrounded by water.

Today a narrow bridge, with shuttle service, runs to the island.

The Mont Saint-Michel, with its stepped streets, is only accessible to pedestrians.

In 1979, the Mont Saint-Michel with its abbey complex and the surrounding bay was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Mont Saint-Michel is the third action attraction in France, after the Eiffel Tower and the Palace of Versailles, with more than 3,500,000 visitors.

blurred contours and if you look at the painting from a distance, it becomes visible what it includes....to see things you do not need clarity but a heart to see and a desire to feel and an eyes that accomodate imagination.
