Satyawati -23 Poem by Unnikrishnan Sivasankara Menon

Satyawati -23

Rating: 5.0

23. Abduction

Devabrata's valour and expertise
In archery were well-known.
This was the occasion when
He was tested out in the open.

He had challenged the emperor
Single handed, for a duel
For not inviting Vichitravirya
His brother, for the swayamvara.

A minister who spoke about
Fisherwoman feigning as queen
Was answered by his sword
Right before the emperor's eyes.

Eerie silence reigned in the palace
The entire coterie stood dumbfounded
Before they could wink their eyes
Bhisma started off with the princesses

His fierce arrows quelled the army
Of Kaashi, known for its numbers,
Gallantry and modern weapons,
Like wild fire burning down a forest.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Abduction of brides by princes, the groom-prospects, for marriage was accepted in those days. But in most cases, this occurred with the consent of the bride, as in the case of Krishna abducting Rukmini. Here, the princesses were carried away without their consent. Moreover, Devabrata had carried the princesses away for marriage with his brother.
But the abducted princesses, had little choice than resign to their fate, bowing down to the power of the abductor.

In this episode Satyawati-23, dear ES, you have hauntingly inscribed the abduction of princess of Kashi, the bride, for not inviting Vichitravirya, the brother of Devabrata for the swayamvara telling fisherman. Devabrata alias Bhisma taught the army of Kashi a good lesson through his gallantry and modern weapons. Enjoable topic. Thanks for sharing.

Oh, my story has turned so very sad. Truth has a bad habit of having a dark and cruel side. But I will travel through this darkness to what I hope is a sunlit ending. Tis the way of tales to have beauty, trial, villains, and heroes who someday win the day. 10+++++++++++++++++++

Thank you Geeta. But these are the words used by The Great Sage himself, and by Ezhutthachhan too. I just attempted it in English. Thank you again.
