Tears - Poem by Chandra Hohmann

I watch silently as the child cries
He does not know about war
Or right and wrong

All he knows is that his father is gone
His stomach is empty

He doesn’t know why

A casualty of war
Ended before his life is really begun

I step forward
Wrapping my arms around the shivering body
Imploring someone to come and care for this babe
For I am but a dream here
And can do nothing

He cries for his pain
I cry for his innocence

I leave as some woman comes
Not his mother
His mother can never come to him again
I can do nothing more

Only hope…

That this child gets a chance to grow
