The Dragon & The Traveller Poem by Kewayne Wadley

The Dragon & The Traveller

As the dragon grew older he firecely yearned for more
More than the prison he slowly knew as home
Moments grew into days as the seconds became blind
He'd spew fire as his temper would flare
Each day he'd sit and recite
His temptation impatient
drove him to insanity
The walls began to close as his claws dug as far as they could dig into his rock tomb
One day a lonely traveller crossed paths
Seeking food shelter
He stumbled into the dragons path
Selfish
his fire roared behind his eyes as he stared at the man
The traveller
seeing the starvation in the dragons eyes as well asked
If only for a moment if he could rest legs bandaged from his travels
He pled they could not step any further
If food is an opition could he spare some of the fruit that was behind him
The dragon became enraged
His fire touched the roof of the cave and back down to his feet
Smoke rested against the rock walls
The dragon gave way and spared a piece or two of fruit leaving plentiful behind himself
The traveller grew greatful
and asked if any way to repay his debt
The dragon grew more enraged
insulted by the question set ablaze the man's legs fire with a mind of it's own knew no bound
Scorching what was left of the traveller with life rapidly leaving his body he asked
Dear dragon, why would you burn me so
with you not being able to escape a cave this small
My body now a crisp we shall surely die
The dragon simply replied it's my nature
