The Last Words He Ever Said Poem by Norah Tunney

The Last Words He Ever Said

Rating: 5.0

The night before he died
he kept pulling at the sheets,
I wondered if his mind was going?
so I asked him-
do you know who I am?
he smiled and said
'I know you Very well'
emphasising the 'Very'
we laughed
until a lonely tear trickled
down his cheek,
I looked into his eyes
infinitely tender
and I wept-
there are moments
in a lifetime almost too much
to bear.

So heart-touching. Some moments leave indelible marks. The reader can feel the pain of parting. A beautiful write. A10.

We all have to leave, someday. We are all in the same boat, sailing towards some kinda paradise. Sorry for your loss

It's such a mystery Nick. The loss has now turned into presence but like many poets I love to recapture precious moments in time. Thank you Nick

Deep loss is the surface of deep love. Your loss is so profoundly great because of the profound depths of the love that lay beneath the surface. In the image of a single tear, you have moved your readers' hearts to plunge beneath the surface of that pain; you have drawn upon our shared experiences of humanity and brought us humbly to the quiet place where we must face the reality that to live deeply, to love deeply, to walk deeply in the discourse of this life, we must not only risk great loss, but certainly plunge into its cold embrace. A wondrous tribute, dear poet. S

pain and grief writ strong in every line and word...it couldn't be more potent than this... the lost love drips at every stop... very well written liked

Norah, I'm supposed to write a comment here. But how can I? How can any of us? There is such love pulsing under each word, such love and such grieving, that all we can do is stand here bearing witness. I am sorry, Norah, but I am glad you had such a wonderful love.

That was nearly 3 years ago now Susan but memories still surface around his last days and it is so healing to write about it. Thank you Susan.
