The Mental Masquerade - Poem by Anonymous Student

The ballroom now is filled with guests
Who speak only to costumes
The fowl stench of rotting flesh
Is drowned out by the perfumes

The extrovert with the garish mask
Pretends he doesn't have his flask
And the introvert with the heart grown cool
Thinks the others know he is a fool

There's Hard-working, Intelligent
Kind and Caring
But these are only the names of the masks ones are bearing
For beneath they're all the same
Attempting to hide the shame
They all know that their lives are dull
But they were to afraid to change

The child in the corner cowers in fear
As ones in the masks come ever near
The beautiful faces on all their masks
The poor little child can see straight past

But there's something about when the lights are off
When the masks are often untied
But not this time, as fear sweeps the crowd
They couldn't take them off no matter how hard they tried

They all could never find the truth
Through the false joy that they made
And now they're doomed to live a lie
Trapped in the masks 'till they day they die
The small child is now forced to hide
In the Mental Masquerade
