The Vagrant-Spring Poem by Loke Kok yee

The Vagrant-Spring

Rating: 5.0

His home lay under a bridge where the river ran wide
A few pieces of cardboard but no walls to divide
On the day he was born, it was a day filled with grief
For the river had rose and his mother's joy was brief
A father never known, for the woman worked the streets
The nights ran hot or cold while in the day hunger greets

Necessity taught him to quickly learn to survive
As his mother passed on, worn out by a life deprived
Leaving him to fend alone; in the spring of his life

The dusk of winter came and wintering birds returned
But he noticed not the change; the cold his main concern
His shoes would not stay on for they were a little big
The melting snow oozed in as he tramped on fallen twigs
His tiny hands grew numb while rummaging through the bins
Once in a while rewarded and happily he grinned

But as the days grew warmer, a yearning brewed in him
To leave behind the past and a life that was so grim
In the summer of his youth he had set out full of vim

A great poem that touches the hearts of the readers. An ugly truth painted by the poet. A poem that shakes the human conscience.

Dear Loke, This is such a heart rending poem that speaks of poverty. It is so terrible to be born on the streets. The very necessity of life like food and shelter is in itself a problem. In India too, we have so many poverty stricken children and mothers in spite of several NGO's. I feel very sad. Thank you for sharing such a meaningful and an emotional poem. A full Vote!

Such a touching write! Here life in its grim realities is presented poignantly...! This is the story of many living in the fringes of society! Though they don't have loving parents to take care of them or a place to call their home, they do have dreams! Let the society and all of us do something so that their dreams find fruition some time. Loke, welcome back....! So happy to see you once more here! (10)
