There Lived A Man Poem by Scarlett Treat

There Lived A Man

Rating: 3.6

Sometime before my time,
There lived a man...
Full of adventure,
Who traveled the land.

The war he was fighting in
Was hell on earth,
But he felt he had to fight it
Because of his birth.

He, born South of the Mason/Dixon Line,
And it, pitting brother against brother,
Friends against friends,
Neighbors against one another.

But he met an Irish lass,
With hair as black as coal
And eyes of lightning blue
Who touched his soul.

And so he stayed with her,
But only for a while,
In fact, just long enough
To give her a child.

And then he was gone again.
Like a puff of smoke,
Down the road he traveled,
Leaving her with a heart that broke.

He was a Grandfather of mine,
A long, long time ago,
So I know the story is true,
Yes, I know it is so.

Those itchy feet of one who travels and never settles down. Lovely reminisciences here Scarlett, and a delight to read. Love and hugs Ernestine XXX

Sweet Scarlett...you do indeed know how to weave simple words into a capturing story...a true story, in this case...Excellent work, young lady, and as Tom M. put it: Because of him...there is Y O U...so, Mason Dixon Line or not....i like this man! FjR

You left us guessing if he was off to the war again and did not return, or if he just ran out on her. Either way, it broke her heart but started a blood-line that led to you. Life was more difficult back then for both men, women and children. I tried to convey this in my poem 'It May Not Seem Fair.' You have told us just enough to make another one of your great peoms.
