Touch Wood Poem by Ruta Mohapatra

Touch Wood

Rating: 5.0

The silence deepening since Monday
Became deafening this afternoon

The pandemic finally touched our colony
Claiming one of its residents

The flat above mine in total darkness
The air round it heavy with sadness

The green plants on its balcony quiet
With two dry leaves and a pink Hibiscus

The beautiful flower belying the tragedy
Nature oblivious of the loss that has occurred

The news shook me up when it reached me
I touched the wood, praying for my own safety

Yard after yard Colony after colony Body to body The unseen enemy running And infecting like the wind touching And killing mournfully

There is panic everywhere... gloomy atmosphere dominates every sphere of life and all around...
