Where Dreams Go - Poem by Dilantha Gunawardana

I saw the highway
Where my dreams speed
Straight as a beam of light
Indomitable like a lion
My dreams that burnt the incense
Of my naïve heart
Aromatizing every chamber
And every tip of where my blood flows
A juggernaut that carries me
On her lofty seat
Where I can gaze at the mileposts
And dream of a destined place
Where a fair maiden will lay
With her lips tastefully open
For a hero’s kiss

Alas, I diverted at the third milepost
Finding myself in no man’s land
In the midst of my thirties
Torn like a piece of rags
Wounded like an unarmed soldier
Bursting with cynicism
At where my dreams once lay
A man impaled with bitterness
Where love was a sun-parched wishing well
As I stood at the nadir of loneliness
With a half-scripted life
Where dreams were evaporated
By the raging sunshine of perfection
For the perfectionist is royalty of the fools
Dreaming like a prince
When all that lay in this world
Is smudged by imperfection

So that’s where my dreams went
Down a black hole to an oblivion
Where an old man stands
With a bottle of rum in his hands
Remembering the sparkle of his youthful dreams
For dreams are not destined highways
Paved of perfection
Only uncharted thickets that lead you
Down that quest of glitter

Remember my child
That dreams are like fire
They sparkle, flicker and disappear
And they too need to be protected like a child
For their naivety and innocence
And be guided down the trickle of time
To the zenith of realization
Where serendipity will rest
As the residue of labor’s design

    Remember my child

And they too need to be protected like a child
    For their naivety and innocence
And be guided down the trickle of time
    To the zenith of realization

Verily, dreams are to be protected, nourished, and taken care as a child
