Young Goldfinch Poem by Glen Kappy

Young Goldfinch

from "While Passing Through"/Summer

Young goldfinch
hops up down branch to branch
fluttering yellow—
boyhood summers I was free
to idle, play, all day.

A lively image of goldfinch flying from branch to branch in fluttering yellow hues. It does remind of carefree childhood days. A beautiful Tanka! Trust all is fine at your end, Glen.

I love goldfinch and most other birds. This poem is very relaxing and refreshing. Thanks.

Once I had two cute finches as pets! They lived happy, taking occasional dip in the small cabin of water devised for that purpose. They enjoyed preening each other's feathers and sleeping together glued so close! Though in captivity, they seemed to have enjoyed life. But after a year or so one of them died and the other was so sad. Seeing her so grief stricken, I let her out of her cage. Reading your poem on the goldfinch on a summer day, all those sweet memories are brought to mind so alive.

ah yes, girlhood summers spent in the desert riding my horse, chasing coyotes who laughed as they darted and dodged away, ah those were carefree days for which we pay for now
