The Solemn Field

I dreamt you died in solemn standing
Upon the sunlit grass
No trees to shade upon your cheeks
Nor bed to hold you last

No wooden cast in which you'd lay
Nor man to dig the grave
No flowers laid upon the mound
Nor stone to mark the day

No tales shall reach your children's ears
Nor medals ever shown
The fears of men came true for you
To die alone unknown
