Was it somewhere in my early youth
That my heart disclosed this later truth?
When-where-with whom I belong,
Shadows-show me how I went wrong!
Why so near is farthest apart
And time so dear
Mocks real effort! ...
Remember me! Remember me!
For we have not yet
Answered each other souls,
Uncaptured, dare be lighter
And just hearts find a brighter star,
Hesitating wings seeking your flight
Away from scorn
And sight tarnished life! ..
Now, lest fear shall have me flutter,
Stripping myself of childhood shelter
In some unknown but worthy way,
I return to life's array!
Welcome me in-friend or lover
And hear this message,
As muted as thunder! ...
I, too, have sinned,
I, too, have burned!
This is the afterward-soul discerned,
When conscience does a flame ignite
And reduce to ash
Our acts of plight!
Behind a cloud of smoke,
I leave now, a spirit uncloaked!
