In the country we live in
Be it our motherland or else,
A sense of freedom,
A life of fearlessness,
The fragrance of peace,
Must prevail, to call it a homeland!
Right from his childhood,
Albert despised his native land - Germany.
He could not tolerate military regimentation,
The humiliation and the punishments,
The students suffered in schools.
He hated force, fear and authoritativeness.
He firmly believed that such treatment destroyed
Sound sentiments and the self-confidence of the pupil.
At seventeen years of age, while in Zurich,
Albert Einstein, with the permission of his father,
Relinquished his German citizenship most happily.
He was without any identity for five years,
Which included his study period in Polytechnical college.
In 1901, he became a citizen of his chosen country - Switzerland.
This is the place where his talents blossomed,
Thrived and reached a successful pinnacle.
