Brian, Pam, Shannon, Andy, & James....[ Personal; A Poem-Letter To My Daughter ]

[ A Poem-letter ]

My name is Brian and my only child, Shannon, I love.
I never sought parenthood but then 'push came to shove',
aka my first wife said: 'I'll not be complete till I give birth'.
So we had one baby, Shannon, who's shown MUCH worth.

I told Shannon, when she was but a young kid still, the truth,
and perhaps I should have waited till she'd outgrown her youth.
I told her: 'I never wanted to be a dad'; I hope it didn't make....
her sad.
But what's done is done and now we still both 'love' each other,
for which I'm VERY glad.

She's a part time physician, and cherishes her husband, Andy, and....
her son.
My 'S' and 'Dad', Andy, planned for 3 or 4 kids but ended up with
just one.
My grandson, James,10 years old now, is one kid of many in the....
'Autistic Spectrum', .....
but, of 'J' 's position', his Mom & Dad, I think, are never, ever,
'ho-hum'. ***

During a recent, infrequent telephone call I made to my daughter, she
listed activities of James:
He goes to 'swim camp', takes, I think, dance AND ALSO gymnastics
lessons, and plays computer games.
He's had piano lessons and in school plays a trombone in the school's
band. [ Wow! ]

It all makes me wonder where in adulthood, my only grandchild, James
will 'land'.

I've never lived anywhere near James and met him but once, when he
was nearly one year old.
He's in a 'mainstream' school, but at times he's had 'help' from a classroom
aide I've been told.
I think 'Dad' works from home, so THAT must help I will assume, and
J's other (3) grandparents live quite close-by, so that also helps develop....
his socialization; I hope so and so presume!

I'm 'writing' this for Shannon & Andy, and maybe some day they can share
with an adult James.
I hope that James continues being so active and that in his future he can reach
his and his parents' aims.
Good Luck to all THREE of you. I'll always wish you're all 'well'. What your
3 futures hold, only 'time will tell'.

***
Ho-hum: adjective:
'so lacking in interest as to cause mental weariness. Example: 'a ho-hum speaker who couldn't capture their attention'.....

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I'll send this to Shannon now, though she probably won't notice it in her very overflowing email Inbox. She is a very busy girl (my 42 year(s) old child) . I had my vasectomy (by Dr. Stopp; I'm not lying) a few months after Shannon was born. Her mom commenced divorce proceedings when Shannon was 5 years old, and Pam raised our daughter well-enough. I have no regrets. :) bri

Meeting the complex needs of a person with ASD can put families under a great deal of stress. But social supports can ease the stress especially school supports. And the parents of Andy are great parents. So focused on the needs of Andy.

You have a beautiful family, Bri. You have an intelligent daughter and with great character and a very responsible mother. Your ex wife is a great mother and grandmother too. And your son in law is a caring father.

Your great love for Shannon is reflected in the first and last line of the first stanza of the poem. Very touching lines. No matter how much life changes, family is family. We always have that sense of belonging and support in our family.

A sincere and deeply felt poem. Going through this wonderful poem, a reader could feel that your emotional expression comes from your heart and is associated with your strong feelings of love to your family especially for your daughter, Shannon.

Liveliness of language is what makes a poem grand, / For instance, you wonder where your grandson will 'LAND'!

Parenting in America is different than in my part of the world. I don't understand WHY couples divorce. Something called compromise is always there to keep the ego in check.

(cont.) People with ASD often have problems with social communication and interaction, and restricted or repetitive behaviors or interests. People with ASD may also have different ways of learning, moving, or paying attention.'

If I put myself in your daughter's shoes, I will make a hard copy of this poem and treasure it forever. Not everybody has the privilege to have a wonderful poem from a father.
